It is a small mistake, right up until it stops the whole day. Maybe you were leaving work in University City. Maybe the car is in a Center City garage and you are already late. Or the trouble is back at home, where an old rowhome lock has picked tonight to quit.

Start with what happened. You do not have to know whether the key has a transponder chip or what kind of cylinder is inside the front door. "The key turns, but the car will not start" is useful. So is "the deadbolt only moves if I pull on the door."

Opening a locked car with the keys inside is one thing. Creating and programming a smart key when every original is gone is another. At home, rekeying a sound lock is different from replacing hardware that is bent, loose, or broken.

Watch out for a quote that sounds impossibly low. It may cover only the trip to your location. Ask what is included. Ask what could change after the locksmith sees the job. Nobody wants to debate a surprise number beside an open car door.

Experience also means saying, "This one needs the dealer," when that is the truth. Not every year and model works with the same equipment. Not every damaged lock should be saved. Clear limits build more trust than big promises.
